Silver Bow Kiwanis Kiwanis Club Meeting, Nov 13, '12
12:00-1:00 Tuesday, November 13, 2012Roger let us know that the Golden K Kiwanis club in Billings is having their fruit sales again this year. Arrangements have been made to have all the orders for Butte hauled here by truck on January 10. If you are interested in ordering apples, pears, grapefruit, or oranges, contact Roger.
We have also brought in the first $5,000 from our raffle ticket sales, so the prize is covered, but we need to sell the rest of the tickets to make sure we are covered for our club activities and projects for the next year.
We will be doing Photos with Santa at the Library during the Christmas Stroll on Saturday, December 1 from 2-5. We need volunteers to sell photos and help with the line, and we may need volunteers to set up at the library in advance. We also need a Santa or two (Josh Peck has lent us a Santa costume). And it would be nice to have some props and a nice chair for Santa so he doesn't have to sit on a plain Library chair.
We had another drawing for a shirt today, and Ken won. Congratulations.
Clair let us know that the Exchange Club has challenged us that they will raise more money than our club doing bell ringing for the Salvation Army. Clair will have a sign up form next week to get us started.
Tim, our acting president for the day, then introduced Josh to talk about the Christmas Stroll. This year the stroll is Saturday afternoon, rather than Friday night. There were two main drivers for the change, first, many uptown businesses were unable to accommodate the late hours and second there have been problems with some youth gathering and causing issues during the stroll at night. In addition, the sub-zero temperatures each of the last three years when lighting the tree discouraged attendance. This year is a trial run of the earlier hours to see how it works and what feedback is from both attendees and businesses.
There will be music at several venues this year, including Irish dancing at the Pioneer Club, music at the Library, and several groups performing at the courthouse.
In addition, the next Saturday, December 8, will be the ice sculpture contest, and several people are trying to get a party together somewhere Uptown to watch the CNN Heroes award presentation on December 2.
Josh then turned the meeting over to Bill, to talk about the progress with getting a Boys and Girls Club here in Butte. Bill let us know that the Boys and Girls Club board will be serving s'mores at the Christmas Stroll, so if we have an opportunity to get away from our Santa Pictures, we should find them.
The Boys and Girls Club will provide structured activities for youth. The club in Anaconda was established just a couple years ago and has helped to address several truancy and delinquency issues there.
In '07 there were 426 juvenile arrests in Silver Bow County. In '08 that rose to 576. These arrests include arson, disturbing the peace, DUI, MiP, and others. A Boys and Girls Club in Butte will help address these issues by providing activities, supervision, and helping kids develop ongoing relationships with caring adults.
