Silver Bow Kiwanis Kiwanis Club Meeting, Mar 12, '13
12:00-1:00 Tuesday, March 12, 2013Today we had Matt, Michaela, Rick, and Adriana from the Circle K here. Next week the Key Club should be in attendance, with butter braided bread, for those of us who ordered!
Congratulations to our Key Club at Butte Central High for taking over 15 of the 30 awards given at the Montana District Key Club convention.
Jeremy took a moment to tell us about the planning he and Kristi have been working on with Cathy regarding programs. They hope to have kids or child-focused programs, general interest programs, internal or business programs, and socials, each about once a month. In addition, for months with a fifth Tuesday, they will try to plan field trips like the recent one to Wetonas, and others we have taken in the past to the Berkely Pit, Headframe Spirits, Quarry Brewing, Toyota of Butte, and other locations. He reiterated that he, Cathy, and Kristi are interested in hearing what the members would like to see or hear, and any specific program ideas people have.
Jeremy then played a TEDx video for us: A girl who demanded school. This video is by a woman from Kenya who had to work within the bounds of her culture and social constructs to be able to go to school. From enduring genital mutilation (which she later learned was illegal in Kenya) to having to convince the male elders of her community that she was not taking privileges away from a boy by asking to be allowed to go to school in the United States, to having to get permission to build a school for girls in her community on her return. Her school now educates 125 girls, who will know that they have rights, can own property, and can decide on their own marriages.
