Today we were joined by Matt, Laura, and Paul from the Circle K, former member Ed Kilgore from California, and Holly Campbell from Glacier Bank.

Brandi educated us letting us know that 10.5 million MNT shots have been purchased in the first nine months of 2013, putting Kiwanis International well on the way to providing the 110 million shots needed by the end of 2015.

Cathy let us know about the Circle K meeting tonight and that the Builder's Club meeting and Key Club meetings this week have been cancelled because it is a short week for the Catholic schools.

Also, one of the Missoula Kiwanis clubs is selling boxed fruit this fall. We will try to have more information next week.

Sunvee introduced our speaker, Brandi Taylor, to talk to us about the Gracie Faith SIDS Prevention Program.

Brandi started the Gracie Faith SIDS Prevention Program after her 20 day old daughter died from SIDS just four months ago. After her loss St. James Hospital let her know that she would be eligible for a monitor if she has another baby, to reduce the risk of having this happen again, but that the monitors cost $1,000.

With $4,000 available to her, she considered buying four monitors to give to other mothers who may need them, but was encouraged to go on-line to check for other products. Her research led her to a monitor that can be attached to a baby's diaper that will vibrate if the baby's respiration slows or becomes labored to try to startle the breathing back to normal, or alerts the parent if the breathing does not return to normal in under 10 seconds. She is able to purchase these monitors for about $120 each - a much better price than the $1,000 each the hospital quoted her.

The Gracie Faith SIDS Prevention Program purchases these monitors and sends them out to parents who request them. The family has to return the monitor after their baby's first birthday. Returned monitors are cleaned and batteries replaced, and will be sent out to another family that requests one. There are currently 64 monitors in the Butte community provided by the Gracie Faith SIDS Prevention Program, and another 16 outside our community as far away as Florida.

The Gracie Faith SIDS Prevention Program is having a fundraiser this Saturday, October 19, 2013, at the Country Club. Admission is $5 and there will be a silent auction, a live auction and a 50/50 raffle. The Gracie Faith SIDS Prevention Program is a 501(c)3 non-profit.
