Silver Bow Kiwanis Kiwanis Club Meeting, Jul 1, '14
12:00-1:00 Tuesday, July 1, 2014This week we were joined by Matt from the Circle K.
Cathy introduced out speaker, Wayne Harper. Wayne is a member of the new Evel Kneivel Days committee. The new committee is not affiliated with the previous organizers in any way. Wayne got onto the new committee by offering his services to mediate between the previous organizing group, the county, and the Kneivel family. That quickly turned into an invitation for him to be on the new committee to insure that the event continued to go on in Butte.
Evel Kneivel days is important to Butte, as are the other summer festivals. a 2008 study showed that for the $94k invested to put on the event that year, an estimated $500k was brought into Butte, and additional revenues to neighboring communities like Bozeman, Helena, Dillon, and Deer Lodge.
The new committee is working carefully with Uptown businesses to address their needs and concerns. For example, when the new committee learned that the dust from some of the events on Broadway caused problems for the Broadway Cafe, the committee replaced the dirt jumps on Broadway with ramps and will not be placing dirt tracks or ramps near any other eateries.
This year kids programming at the festival is increased to eight hours per day with a variety of activities, and bands will be playing all day, rather than just the evening 'headliner' concerts of the last couple years.
In conjunction with this year's festivities, there will be two Guiness world record attempts, so Guiness officials will be on site.
Additionally, this year there will be a professional downhill mountain bike race. They will be racing from Daly street in Walkerville to the Acoma in several heats.
