Silver Bow Kiwanis Kiwanis Club Meeting, Jul 8, '14
12:00-1:00 Tuesday, July 8, 2014Today we were joined by David's mother Pat, Kt's husband Mike, and Michaela from the Circle K.
Betsy let us know that yesterday was Cathy's birthday and gave us an update that her daughter and son-in-law in Japan are fine after the typhoon. Also there are now 32 kids signed up for Key Leader, we need at least 60. If you know of other kids that may be able to participate and may benefit from the experience, get them to register.
Cathy then introduced Matt, who doesn't like cherries - which causes problems living in northwest Montana - or peaches - which caused problems when he was in boot camp in the south. Matt is also a tripple major at Montana Tech in addition to being our Circle K District Lt. Governor and Club President.
Matt let us know that AmeriCorps is a service organization. The local branch is run from the Montana Tech campus. They have two main projects: working with Rehabilitating Youth Offenders at the RYO facility in Galen and tutoring students at the Legion Oasis by the municipal golf course. While Matt has worked with the RYO program, he focused his presentation on the tutoring which he has spent more time with - and which the Circle K expressly helps with.
Similar to the Kiwanis B.U.G. program, students who are getting tutoring at the Legion get prizes for improving or maintaining grades. This year the rewards included a trip to the science mine and a trip to Fairmont Hot Springs.
The tutoring varies from helping with math, science, and history homework to reading to the kids. When there is a good balance between volunteers and students it is a very fun experience. Tutoring is offered Monday to Thursday from 3-5pm.
