Silver Bow Kiwanis Kiwanis Club Meeting, Nov 18, '14
12:00-1:00 Tuesday, November 18, 2014Today we were joined by Cody LeBean, the new AmeriCorps VISTA working with RuthAnne. We also had Matt and Reno from the Circle K with us. Cody reminded us of the College Access and Success informational meeting coming up this Friday at 2 at the Legion Oasis.
Dave reported that we had four members attend the Butte Kiwanis meeting last week at Wetona's for lunch. They recruited Leonard Haxby to join the 100 Year Celebration Committee. Dave is planning to visit Anaconda on Thursday and would like those who can to join him then as well.
Matt announced that the Circle K has started selling tickets for their Holiday Care raffle to buy Christmas gifts for several families in need in the Butte community. If you are interested in buying tickets, talk to Matt or Reno (or any other Circle K member) at one of our meetings or come to one of the Circle K meetings. The drawing will be held December 9 at the Circle K Holiday Pot Luck.
Keith reminded us of the Circle K meetings Tuesday and Thursday at 5:15 in the Pintler room in the SUB on campus. Builder's Club meets Wednesday at 12:30 in Ms. Tutty's room at Butte Central Middle School. And the Key Club is meeting at 11:56 in the Butte Central High Library.
Reno let us know that David was admitted to the hospital last Thursday with what appears to be Viral Meningitis. He appears to be doing well, but needs to stay in the hospital until he is no longer spiking fevers.
Claude let us know that Bev is recovering after her heart attack. He reminds us all to watch our health and be aware of the signs of heart attack and seek medical attention rather than brushing it off.
Cathy then introduced our program for the day, Jessica Rosa and Maggie Gamins with Butte High Speech and Debate.
Jessica updated us on the status of the Butte High Speech and Debate Team. This year is a rebuilding year, with 2/3 of the team being new to the program. Many seniors graduated out of the program last year.
However, this is not stopping the Butte High Talking Bulldogs from again hosting the Richest Hill on Earth Invitational January 16-17, 2015. Speech and Debate is the only sanctioned high school program that requires volunteers from the community in order for their events to take place.
So far there are 500 students signed up for this invitational, and more schools requesting to be included. In order to accommodate those already signed up, let alone invite more, the program needs more judges. Those interested in judging should contact Mr. McCullough through the high school or pick up an application at one of our meetings. A training session (not required) will be held on January 14 at 6:30pm.
Maggie presented her Memorized Public Address, where she has to recite a portion of a speech and provide a commentary on that speech. The speech she did was from Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield.
