Silver Bow Kiwanis Kiwanis Club Meeting, Jan 13, '15
12:00-1:00 Tuesday, January 13, 2015Cathy reminded us all that this Friday and Saturday is the Butte High Speech and Debate Invitational. They are still in need of judges for many events. If you can help out, contact Roger McCullough at 533-2173.
Next week we will hear about the Montana Tech Circle K Holiday Care program. Matt Vincent will be our speaker in two weeks, and we are working on getting Safe Space for the week after that.
Silver Bow Kiwanis has been appointed to a seat on the Parks and Recreation committee. Cathy will be attending their meeting January 20. Other members are encouraged to attend.
Our committee reports started with Dave talking about the 100 Year Celebration and PR. They are scheduling a meeting for next week on the 100 year celebration, they are just waiting for one committee member to get back to Dave on schedule. One idea that has come up is a "Hundred Games" series of projects or fund raisers focused around the number 100.
Paul Tash reminded all the committees to get him information on any activities or milestones so he can get press releases out.
RuthAnne let us know that the SLP committee is scheduling a meeting. She also reminded us that we sponsor three Service Leadership Program (SLP) groups: the Butte Central Middle School Builder's Club, the Butte Central High School Key Club, and the Montana Tech Circle K. There are several organizations and programs under the Kiwanis SLP umbrella. For grades 5-7 there is the K-Kids program. At the middle school level there is the Builder's Club program. At the high school level there are the Key Clubs - the largest youth service organization in the world! At the college level there is the Circle K program. And there is also the Aktion Club program for disabled adults. These 5 organizations are built around a similar model to Kiwanis clubs, they meet regularly, have an elected board of officers, and work together to do community service in one way or another. These SLP organizations are sponsored by a Kiwanis club, and the Kiwanis sponsor provides one or more Kiwanis advisors to the SLP organization. In Butte, in addition to our SLP groups mentioned above, there is a Builder's Club at East Middle School sponsored by Sunrise Kiwanis, a Key Club at Butte High sponsored by Butte Kiwanis, and an Aktion Club also sponsored by Butte Kiwanis. In addition to these SLP organizations, there is also the Bringing Up Grades (B.U.G.) program for elementary students maintaining or improving their grades and the Key Leader program of summer camps for High School students.
Jeremy updated us on the Major Emphasis project. We are collecting information on the equipment at the Greeley School to start that project. They have also drafted a letter to send to local businesses to request donations or grants, and are researching available grant money and application processes. They have determined tiers for the donation amounts: Sandbox for donors under $250, Park Bench for donors under $1,000, Witch's Hat for donors under $2,500, Playhouse for donors under $10,000, and Cowboy Swing for donors of $10,000 or more.
Cathy provided the Service committee as Jess was unable to attend. The first project we want to tackle on the "Hundred Games" agenda is to donate at least 100 children's books to Safe Space. We would like to present this donation to them when they are speaking to our club in three weeks. In addition graham crackers, juice boxes, crayons, coloring books, and other supplies to keep a child occupied and entertained while a parent is receiving a medical checkup would be very helpful. Also, the MS Walk has asked Silver Bow Kiwanis to provide a member to serve on their planning committee. If you are interested in helping out, please let Keith know.
The Program committee is in need of someone to schedule speakers. We have a few weeks scheduled and a few people interested in speaking to our group. Gene has agreed to help out with this, if you have speaker ideas, please bring them to Gene along with contact information.
The Membership committee is looking for a chair as well. Mark will be planning a membership recruitment social in the next few weeks. More information to come.
Also, we have a vacancy on the board as there was recently a resignation. If you are interested in serving on the board of directors, please speak with Cathy, Keith, or Shawn.
