Today Cathy reminded us of the Key Club meeting on Thursday, and let us know that the Circle K meeting tonight is cancelled as is the Builder's Club meeting on Wednesday.

Cathy talked about the need for new members and help with the playground initiative. She mentioned thinking about the kinds of professionals we don't have in the club - we have a dentist, but not a doctor or a chiropractor; we have a librarian and a school administrator, but not a teacher or a school counselor. Think about the other professionals you work with all the time and invite them to the club.

Doug then introduced Schylar from the Student Assistance Foundation to talk to us.

The Student Assistance Foundation is a non-profit organization to help students get the money they need for post-secondary education. Schylar's office is currently in the Butte High building, but he was previously at Montana Tech. The move to the high school environment was to facilitate access to high school students to help them prepare for college.

Schylar told us about a number of programs available to help pay for school or offset the costs of school. SAF provides financial education classes to help students better understand the cost of loans, but how to offset that against the benefits of a higher paying career.

Every student in America is eligible for financial aid - you just need to know what to apply for, and when to apply. In many cases, earlier applicants fair better, because limited funds are given on a first-come, first-served basis. There are also a number of dollar matching services or grants available where a student could get $3, $5, or even $8 for every dollar they commit. The requirements for these grants vary, so it is important to be in communication with a financial aid counselor or someone from SAF to make sure students are applying correctly and to help students find what they are eligible for.
