This week we were joined by David from the Circle K.

Cathy reminded us of the board meeting this Thursday at 5:15 at Metals in the Coaches' Corner.

Next Tuesday, June 16, is our SLP recognition barbecue, so we will not have our noon meeting that day.

Paul let us know that past member and former secretary Les Crowe passed away yesterday.

Then Gene called on Paul to let us know what was going on in his world. Paul let us know about his new puppy, Kiri. They've had the puppy for about a month now, and she has already been to their granddaughter's college graduation in Minnesota where she got a lot of attention and got to play with Paul's nephew's puppy.

In two weeks Paul is traveling to northern Saskatchewan on a fishing trip with several friends from around the country.

Paul has been involved with Kiwanis for 42 years, has served as a club president (though not at Silver Bow Kiwanis), as a Lieutenant Governor (though not in Montana), and as a Montana District Governor.

Paul worked for Social Security for 33 years, 7 in the Butte office, before retiring. Since retiring he has worked as a freelance writer. Paul also plays French Horn for the Butte Symphony.

Gene then called on Keith to let us know what's happening in his world.

Keith just got done with MisCon 29 two weeks ago. While the number is 29, it's actually the 30th MisCon. MisCon is Montana's longest running science fiction convention. It is held Memorial Day weekend every year in Missoula. The word MisCon is a contraction of "Missoula Convention."

Science fiction conventions are celebrations of fandom for people interested in science fiction, comics, role-playing and other gaming, historical reenactment, costuming, film and movie production, writing, literature, alternative histories, science, technology, fantasy literature, and horror. There are opportunities at SciFi conventions for people of all walks of life and all social demographics.

MisCon has an art show and auction, costume contest, writers' workshop, several dances, and a drag show each year, in addition to hundreds of hours of panels, programming, and gaming. There are educational opportunities as well as entertainment, and there are activities for kids.

MisCon is a small, old-style convention. One nice thing about a small convention like MisCon with only about 1,200 attendees, as opposed to something like a Comicon with 30,000 attendees, is that at MisCon most attendees will actually get an opportunity to meet the Guests of Honor and Attending Professionals and talk to them one-on-one or in small groups. At a larger convention, even though there are more Guests of Honor, there are just too many people around to get any quality time with any of the Guests.

MisCon attracts top-teir guests. The author Guest of Honor this year was Terry Brooks. Last year it was Jim Butcher, and four years ago George R. R. Martin, author of Game of Thrones. When George R. R. Martin was the Guest of Honor, MisCon got one of the Iron Throne props from the Game of Thrones series from HBO, making this little convention in a corner of Montana one of the first in the country to have a throne on hand during the event.
