Today we were joined by Anthony from the Circle K, Sunvee's daughter Jobe, Paul's daughter Jori, Dave's wife Eva, and Dave adn Eva's friends from Australia, Peter and Sue.

Keith reminded us that the Montana Folk Festival is coming up in a week and a half, and they are still in need of volunteers. Sign up at

Cathy reminded us that there is a board meeting next week, probably at Metals, but she is looking for an outdoor location.

Cathy then introduced Jobe to talk to us about HOBE. HOBE is a leadership camp held each year in June in Missoula. This year it was June 4-7. our club sponsored Jobe attending the camp, which is only open to high school sophomores.

When the campers arrive, they are issued different colored shirts, and those shirts determine their teams. They had several tasks each day, as well as a number of speakers. One day they walked from the UM campus to a barbecue sponsored by Sentinel Kiwanis of Missoula, and had a challenge or task for every block.

The took the DISC personality type test and then tried accomplishing tasks by assigning people to jobs that were more suited to their personalities, and they heard from a current Marine about leadership and responsibility.

One memorable task was writing an news article about something they wanted to change in the world. They then spent time reading each article and writing comments or questions on post-it notes for the author.

After Jobe spoke, Dave introduced Peter Kimberly from the Woberly Kiwanis club in Australia. To set the perspective, Dave let us know that their club committed to raising $100,000 for the EliMiNaTe project, and they are already 50% to their goal with only 9 members in the club.

This is Peter and Sue's first visit to Butte, even though they have known Dave and Eva since Dave was Governor of the Montana district - the same year Peter was Governor of the Australia district.

Peter let us know that International was at a great venue and International is a great opportunity to meet Kiwanians from around the world and reconnect with old friends.

Anthony let us know that he had the same impression as a first time attendee coming in from the Circle K side.

Sue commented that it was great to catch up with old friends and meet new people.

Eva commented on the quality of the speakers, especially a motivational speaker who himself has Down's Syndrome.

Dave was excited that even though the EliMiNaTe project is nearly complete (December is the target deadline), people are still interested and excited about it. We are about at 91% of the pledge goal.

Cathy commented that the Fargo Kiwanis club does a pancake breakfast each year where they raise $100,000 and their club has 190 members. She also got to speak with the people from Landscape Structures and they may be sending a person out to look at the park spaces we are looking at working with to try to come up with good recommendations on appropriate equipment.

Paul's daughter, Jori, then let us know a little about her recent trip to Ireland. She was there for a 4 week course on neuroscience and literature, and was really impressed with the number and quality of book stores, and how much people read. Also, the people she met were really concerned about the impression they, and Dublin, were making on the students and other visitors.
