Silver Bow Kiwanis Kiwanis Club Meeting, Aug 4, '15
12:00-1:00 Tuesday, August 4, 2015Today we were joined by Paul's son Kevin and granddaughter Madison, RuthAnne's daughters Abi and Karissa, eight students from China taking part in an intensive English Language and American Culture course and four of their advisors. Dave introduced the adults, Frankie (of Butte Central Catholic Schools), Shu Ling, Jane, Lyla, and Linda, then the students all introduced themselves and told us something about them or about differences between China and the United States.
Cathy reminded us of the An Ri Ra raffle, and had tickets to sell - $5 each or $25 for a book of 6.
We had the sign up sheet out again for the National Night Out for Crimestoppers, which is tonight.
The board is meeting tomorrow at 5:15 at Metals, in the Team Room.
Our picnic is scheduled for August 25 at Stodden Park, and we have a social scheduled for September 1.
Cathy then introduced Tim Lynch of UDAP, a local manufacturer of Bear Spray and Pepper Spray. Tim has been with UDAP for 14 years; the company has been in business for 21 years.
It is important to be prepared when doing anything in bear country. Bears in our area are more aggressive and more territorial than bears in Alaska and northern Canada because of limitations in space and food.
When a bear comes at you you have a very limited response time, usually only two or three seconds, to figure out what to do and act. Having bear spray available, knowing how to use it, and having practiced so you can do it almost reflexively can prevent a mauling and save your life.
Every bear's reaction to bear spray is different, but bear spray is consistently more effective in deterring or stopping an attack than a firearm.
