Remember, we have a board meeting this Thursday at 7:00am at Perkins.

Tim introduced Officer Jeff Williams who talked to us about identity theft in general, and a little about the specific cases here in Butte last December and January. That incident currently has about 300 victims, and generally just debit or credit card information was compromised. There are suspects, but they are believed to be in Eastern Europe. Officer Williams was not able to speak much more about the Butte cases since it is an ongoing investigation.

Officer Williams talked to us about what identity theft is, how it happens, and what can be done to prevent it.

The most important thing to remember is that if you are a victim of identity theft, immediately file a report with local law enforcement to get a record that you are a victim.

Identity theft can be used to steal money from you, create new bank or credit card accounts in your name, change your billing address, forge credit cards with your card information, make on-line purchases, open utility accounts in your name, initiate electronic transfers of money, obtain loans, gain employment, use your information if they get arrested, or get medical service in your name - which can have deadly impacts to your medical record. Also, once someone has this information, they can sell it to other criminals who can also do any of these things.

If you are the victim of identity theft, first file a fraud alert on your credit report - you only need to call one of the reporting agencies: Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion. Then close all affected accounts. Report the incident to the FTC, and make sure to report the incident to local law enforcement and get a copy of your report once filed.
