Ed and Sue from the Sunrise Kiwanis Club joined us today, as well as Nicole from the Circle K. Ed and Sue gave us more information about their Chuckles for Charity show on April 2, and were able to sell some tickets and get some posters out. Then Keith gave us another update on the Backpacks for Safe Space project. Many materials have been donated, but we are still in need of sweats and shirts. Silver Bow Kiwanis donated $200 to help this backpack project. Then Dave L. announced that there is a Chinese Dance Recital tonight at the Maroon Activity Center at 6:30 that is free to the public. This event is being put on by the Mai Wah Museum and Butte Central Catholic Schools.

Then Tim introduced our own Dave Curry to talk about the EliMiNaTe project. Dave ran for Kiwanis International President largely because he wanted to be involved in the next big international project from Kiwanis. The last project, IDD was very successful and helped to maintain Kiwanis numbers when other service organizations were having larger membership losses.

The EliMiNaTe project is moving to eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus throughout the world. One way is by providing education to midwives and other maternal and birthing care providers which helps a lot, but primarily the project is focusing on immunizing expecting mothers and newborns. The immunizations cost only $0.60 each, and the first one can be given to the mother, then two boosters to the infant to prevent the disease. Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus, or MNT, is a horrible way for a child to die, and it affects 129,000,000 mothers and children in 39 countries worldwide. 1 baby is lost every 9 minutes to MNT.

Dave challenged Silver Bow Kiwanis to become the first Model Club for this project in Montana and to bring the presentation to other clubs. The cost of being a model club is $750 per member over the course of the 4 year EliMiNaTe project.
